It is a multi-faceted mystery that is obscured and clouded by the hoopla of American consumerism so pervasive all around us.

I recently re-watched God Grew Tired Of Us, a terrific documentary on the journey of Christian Sudanese refugees coming to the United States. In this short clip, they wonder about why Christian Americans celebrate Christmas the way we do . . . I find myself agreeing with them.

We’re going to talk about it on Sunday, as we look at Zechariah’s song, in Luke 1.57-80.

If a friend tells you, “Oh, while you were away on vacation, I found a bill in your mailbox, and I paid for it,” you wouldn’t know how to respond until you knew which bill they paid. Maybe they paid your $20 magazine subscription, or maybe they paid your $30,000 student loan. Your response is dependent upon which bill they paid. And so it is with Christmas. What good does Jesus do? Why do we need him to come? In this season, we’re going to look at how much we need God to come to us and our world . . . then we’ll celebrate all the more on Christmas . . . celebrating the fact that he has come, and is coming.

How did Noah get all those animals on the ark? Did Jesus really turn water into wine? Aren’t there lots of contradictions in the Bible? How can we trust the Bible when we don’t even have the original manuscripts? And we have thousands of ancient copies, and none of them agree with each other about what the Bible supposedly says. So, how can we base our lives on such an unreliable, ancient book? And what about some of the bizarre moral codes of the Old Testament? Why should we pretend that this is a good thing anymore?

Do you have questions about the Bible? Do you know someone who does? This sermon will address some of these questions and ultimately address the reliability of the Bible.

The sermon will be based on 1 Tim. 3.16-17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

<itunes:summary>How did Noah get all those animals on the ark?

3.16-17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”</itunes:summary>
